Almost 10m illegal cigarettes seized by Irish police

Cigarettes price over €8.2m (£7.2m) have been found after a car was searched in County Louth on Friday, gardaí (Irish police) have mentioned.

About 9.8m illicit cigarettes, branded Platinum Seven, had been discovered with the help of detector canine, Toby.

Police mentioned it represented a lack of about €6.4m (£5.6m) to the Irish exchequer.

The seizure was made as a part of an intelligence-led operation between Income Eire officers and gardaí concentrating on the provision of unlawful tobacco merchandise.

Income Eire mentioned a person in his 60s has been questioned and investigations had been ongoing.
